How Age Is Calculated
Chronological age is calculated by comparing calendar dates: birth year/month/day versus the reference date (today by default). The calculator first counts completed years — if the birthday has not yet occurred in the reference year, one year is subtracted. Remaining months and days are then counted from the most recent birthday. Total days or dividing by 365.25 is only an approximation for elapsed-day counts, not the primary method for exact calendar age.

Example
Born March 10, 2000 → on March 10, 2025: exactly 25 years, 0 months, 0 days. On September 1, 2025: 25 years, 5 months, 22 days. The years are completed birthdays; months and days are the remainder since the last birthday.
Limitations and Common Mistakes
- Enter the birth date correctly — swapping month and day is a common error.
- Age depends on the reference date — today by default, or the end date you enter. Changing the reference date changes the result.
- Birth time is not needed for ordinary calendar age (years/months/days).
- Timezone or exact birth time matters only for very precise elapsed-time counts (hours, minutes), not for calendar age.
- Calendar age differs from total days ÷ 365 — dividing elapsed days by 365 or 365.25 is an approximation, not an exact calendar age.
How to Interpret Your Result
- Years/months/days vs total days: The top row shows your age in the familiar format. The "Total" rows show the raw count — 13,351 days or ~320,000 hours. These different views can reframe how you think about time.
- Days until birthday: A handy countdown for planning. Note it counts calendar days, not "sleeps" — if your birthday is tomorrow, it shows 1, not 0.
- End date for past/future: Enter a custom end date to calculate age at a specific point — useful for historical research, eligibility checks, or "age on this date" questions. For day-counting between two arbitrary dates, use the Date Difference Calculator.
