Real Hourly Wage Formula
Real Hourly Wage = (Salary − Work Expenses) ÷ (Work Hours + Commute Hours)
Your nominal hourly wage is simply salary ÷ work hours. Your real hourly wage goes further: it subtracts the money you spend because of work (lunch, transport, work clothing) and adds the time you spend because of work (commuting). The result is what each hour of your life is truly worth when work is factored in.
Example
Someone earning $60,000/year, working 40 hours/week, commuting 30 minutes each way, 5 days a week, spending $10/day on lunch and $5/day on transport:
That's $3.90 less per hour than the nominal rate — a 13.5% reduction caused by commute time and work expenses alone.
How to Interpret Your Result
The gap between your nominal and real hourly wage reveals the hidden cost of your job. This number matters for real decisions:
- Comparing jobs: A $65,000 job with a 60-minute commute and $20/day expenses might have a lower real hourly wage than a $58,000 job you can walk to. Use this calculator to compare offers honestly.
- Is the raise worth it? A $5,000 raise that adds 45 minutes of commute each way might actually lower your real hourly wage. Compare before accepting.
- Time is money: If your real hourly wage is $25 and you can pay someone $20 to do a 2-hour task, you come out ahead. This calculator helps you see when outsourcing makes sense.
Assumptions
This calculator assumes 52 work weeks per year and uses your commute and daily expenses as entered. It does not account for taxes (both nominal and real wages are pre-tax), unpaid lunch time at the office, work clothing costs, childcare made necessary by work, or stress-related health costs. The real hourly wage shown is therefore a conservative estimate — your true rate may be even lower if you include additional work-related costs.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a real hourly wage?
Your real hourly wage accounts for commute time, lunch breaks, work clothing, and other expenses. It shows what you actually earn per hour of your life spent working.
How is real hourly wage different from regular hourly wage?
Regular hourly wage is salary ÷ work hours. Real hourly wage also deducts commute time and work expenses, giving a more accurate picture of your true earnings.
Why does real hourly wage matter?
It helps you make better financial decisions. A higher-paying job with a long commute might pay less per hour of your life than a closer job with a lower salary.
